Adrian Lucas - Organ

The history of the organs in Portsmouth Cathedral is one of change and replacement; the only major surviving aspect of all the instruments being the celebrated Jordan case of 1718. Until 1993 the organ was a medium sized three manual by J W Walker which came originally from St. Michaels Church in Portsmouth in 1947. It, in turn, replaced the previous instrument, also a Walker, which had been taken to the John Compton Organ Works in North Acton for eventual rebuilding, but was almost entirely destroyed when the works were hit by a bomb in World War II.

All the pieces on this recording have a common theme; in fact, a theme with variations, both formal and informal, is the basic structure of every item, ranging from the formality of the Bach Partita through the orchestral romanticism of Karg-Elert to the pre-war impressionism of Jehan Alain. The many variations present an opportunity to demonstrate the polytonal facets of Portsmouth's new Cathedral organ.
